Noise From The Barnyard

This is where family and friends hang out and discuss world events, family happenings, valley news and things I'm "moosing" about.  It's the day to day across the fence chatter.

(Pre-Fall Folly) Friday Night Surprise Adventure

Friday night is our regular eat-out night, so we headed over to a little Chinese restaurant in a small town over the mountain. It seems odd to find an Asian restaurant tucked away at the foot of a mountain in a small valley in Pennsylvania. This place has the best wonton soup I've ever eaten and the meals are so huge, Darrell and I split one. But even then, we can't eat it all. We should have gone a different way with the fair traffic and all, but Darrell figured that we could find another road over the mountain. It would be an adventure!

We turned on the last road before at the top of the mountain and proceeded ahead. We had never been on this road before and at some point even the GPS didn't know where we were. One road was closed for bridge repair, so we took another road that looked as if it wasn't traveled very much. (The two ruts with grass growing twelve inches high in between them was a dead giveaway.) Anyone familiar with us knows that those kinds of roads don't scare us much and we took comfort in seeing power lines so we figured that we would end up somewhere...and we did...at a dead end near a hunting cabin tucked way back in the mountain. It was a beautiful ride in the woods, untouched and undisturbed by much of anything except the electric poles. So we turned around, and after exhausting every little dead end on that side of the valley, headed back to the main road to sit in fair traffic.

We enjoyed our meal of Chicken with Cashew Nuts and soup, of course. In the summer, all roads lead to ice cream so we trekked over two mountain ranges to a little Amish ice cream shop two valleys over. Darrell wheeled into the parking lot and parked by the corn field. I could barely get out. I took this photo from the front seat of the truck.

It's a quaint little place tucked into the valley, again, in the middle of nowhere. We looked at the menu and I immediately picked the cherry vanilla - rich vanilla ice cream laden with big black sweet cherries. It's my favorite! Of course, being the calorie concious girl that I am, I was extremely relieved to learn that they don't count on the weekend which helped me enjoy my ice cream even more!

We entered the store and I was surprised at the vast amount of goodies they sold there. They even had a few tables inside where you could sit and enjoy them. I was immediately drawn to the strawberry milkshake sign when I saw the beautiful strawberries they had sitting on the counter, but opted for my go-to instead. Darrell is on a primarily ice cream diet right now, so I knew that we would get back there again soon enough that I could probably get one next time.
Once outsie, we found a swing to sit on. It just doesn't get any better than this - a swing, good ice cream, a cool evening, my best friend, and farm scenery.
There was even some comedic entertainment. Nearby the swing was a pen of four billygoats. (Being a farm girl myself, it didn't seem wise to put four billygoats in one pen because, you know, testosterone, but maybe the Amish know something I don't.) Beside the pen is a stand with ice cream cones filled with feed. For $2.00 you take one and feed a goat. Now you have to give it to the Amish. They know how to make a buck. They buy feed and then you pay them to do their work. We didn't fall for it, but a lot of the "English" that were there did, to give their kids something to do.

Now just after I talked about how polite country farm animals are, these goats made a liar out of me. You know how you see videos of the wild goats out west, how they raise up on their hind feet and crash together, butting their heads, and the sound echoes all through the valley? Well, we got a miniature display of that while those silly goats fought over those ice cream cones. LOL! You never saw such goin's on! They weren't the only wild life there. Besides the kids playing on the swingset, there was this sad looking horse tied to a hitching post, looking as if some ice cream might be exactly what he needs. I asked him if they were getting him a pup cup and he just looked at me sorrowfully and said "Neeyyyy!"
After finishing our ice cream we went back a country road and happened on a free range chicken farm? ranch? I've never seen so many chickens in a field ever. We got there right around sundown. As we sat marveling at the amount of chickens there were the whole flock started running towards the barn all at once, as if by some signal that we obviously didn't know. They lined up at the barn doors. I guess it was beddy-bye time for them. And honestly, it was for us too. So we drove home and climbed into bed, thankful for our little  pre-fall folly adventure.
